The Caribbean Is Not Trans-Friendly…

The lovely Caribbean island are tropical dream for many, but if you are gay, lesbian or trans it can be a nightmare. Trinidad is one of the Caribbean islands that is not LGBT friendly…

When I read the Prime Minister’s reasons why our Republic cannot consider any change in the legal status of homosexuals, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender persons, a group commonly collected under the initials LGBT, it reminded me that I had been intending to write a column about our denial country.

Nevertheless, it cannot be acceptable for unknown masked men, with the customary impunity, to kill three residents of a beleaguered and scorned area on the outskirts of our capital.  The outrage of these murders with the customary impunity is heightened given that the Army has been deployed in that area for the stated purpose of suppressing murderous crime and the Minister of National Security is boasting about the success of the de facto martial law imposed there.
It is not just Trinidad many of the Caribbean islands have a low tolerance of anything LGBT. Just look at the Transgender Day of Remembrance and see how many names are from the Caribbean, Central and South America? Islands like Jamaica, and Puerto Rico, countries like Brazil, Guatemala, Honduras, and Colombia where the machismo culture runs deep.
