A Foot In The Door

Portsmouth New Hampshire passed a non-discrimination ordinance banning discrimination for gender identity in employment for city workers. Even through it just covers Portmouth and the city's employees it is a start in a state that had severely defeated an anti-discrimination bill in the state legislature. GLAD (Gay and Lesbian Advocate and Defenders) reported that,
Today by a unanimous 9-0 vote, Portsmouth’s City Council passed a resolution directing the city manager to adopt a non-discrimination policy to protect transgender municipal employees from discrimination.  The resolution was introduced by Portsmouth’s Assistant Mayor, Jim Splaine. GLAD supported the resolution along with local partners.

The resolution also supports statewide non-discrimination protections for transgender people. New Hampshire is currently the only New England state without a statewide non-discrimination law protecting transgender people.
GLAD also reported that Senators Shaheen and Ayotte voted for the Federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA).
