Same-sex marriage bills introduced in RI House and Senate

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- With the 2013 legislation session in just its third day, lawmakers in the House and Senate introduced bills Thursday that would legalize same-sex marriage.

The identical bills were sponsored by Rep. Arthur Handy, D-Cranston, (House bill 5015) and Sen. Donna Nesselbush, D-Pawtucket.

Handy said 42 of 75 House members had signed on as cosponsors, while Nesselbush said 11 of 38 Senate members had signed on as of 4:50 p.m.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Gay marriage has cleared a first hurdle to becoming law in Illinois after approval in a state Senate committee.

The Senate Executive Committee passed the legislation Thursday, sending it to the full Senate. It wasn't clear when that vote would take place.
